Critical Media Literacy is about learning how to critically engage with and make sense of the media. This course equips students with the analytical tools needed to examine media content and make informed choices as active participants in the media landscape. By exploring the intersection of media, power, and representation, students will gain a deeper understanding of how media industries shape public perception and influence societal norms.
Grounded in social activism, this course emphasizes media’s role in shaping and reflecting social change. Students will develop critical skills to analyze, deconstruct, and reconstruct media messages while investigating the structures behind media production, ownership, and distribution. They will explore how media producers make decisions about representation—who is included, how they are portrayed, and who is excluded.
Course topics include media history, misinformation and "fake news," social media and data mining, and media representations of politics, the environment, race, gender, sexuality, class, family, and ability. Through critical analysis and discussion, students will not only become more media-savvy but also more conscious consumers and creators of media content.

Refund Policy
EMA Direct-Pay Funds: Payments made using EMA direct-pay funds are non-refundable once processed. However, credit may be issued for future classes.
Material Fee: $50
A material fee is required to secure your child’s spot in Fall 2025 classes. This fee covers student coursebooks and all necessary class supplies.

No Refunds: Cancellations made during the semester are not eligible for refunds.
